Alive Without, Dead Within

March 6

Revelation 3:1-2

“To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.”

I have come to realize that the people who are everywhere and doing everything are the ones who are out of “it” the most. The individuals who are always the life of the party, the one who does all the creative work in the office, the person who has all the energy in every meeting and project are the ones who are burnt out.  On one side of the spectrum, these people get in the flow of life, moving from one place to the next, they shine like no other. They are full of vigor and energy, and in most cases, they are the ones that keep everyone motivated.

On the other side of the spectrum, things change drastically. These same people that keep everyone on their toes, and bring so much cheerfulness and laughter, die when they walk behind the closed and confined doors of their homes. On the surface, there is so much joy and greatness, but the moment one looks deeper, ‘the life of the party’ no longer has that ‘life’ in them.

Unfortunately, that’s the life most of us believers are living. When we step outside in the world we look good, and we seem to have it all together, but deep down in the core of our hearts, we are dead. There is no real exuberance and joy in us. We appear as though we are fit, but indeed we are not. We must understand that what matters is what’s on the inside, and for that reason, if we are dead within us, how alive we are outward means nothing. Our state internally matters more than what is on the exterior.

The beauty of it is that we have hope in the Lord. For those of us who may find ourselves dead, we have confidence that He can strengthen us and enable us to come back to life. Do not lose hope in yourself, but allow the Holy Spirit to strengthen you and give you the power that you need to shine within. Be more concerned about your inward liveliness, because if you are genuinely alive inside it will be expressed physically.
