Proverbs 13:3
“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”
As you may have heard, if you do not have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all. Though it might seem harsh, it’s a reality; words are powerful. They hold so much power over a person, and for this reason it essential that the words we speak are edifying. You might consider yourself as someone who is not affected by words, but the truth is that words affect us all. Words can break you whether you believe it or not. Words can build and destroy, bring together and disassemble. There are so many lives we can persevere including our own by filtering the words that we speak. We do not have to say the first thing that comes to our minds. It is ok to think before you speak, just as it is ok not to speak at all.
Many things influence the way we speak. One element that affects us is our emotions. Our emotions cause us to do and express ourselves in manners that are sometimes unbelievable to us. If we make it a point always to follow our feelings, we will always find ourselves in a bind. If you guard your lips and filter your words, you will not only preserve your life but that of others as well. Do not allow words to destroy your relationships. Do not let words cost you your job or anything meaningful in life. Harsh words and rash speaking will always bring ruin. Watch your mouth, filter and evaluate every word before it escapes your lips.
